Hell Dorado skirmish war-game acquired by Cipher Studios, LLC

Longview, WA USA September 1st, 2009 – Cipher Studios, LLC., a miniature manufacturing company and producer of the highly successful Anima Tactics skirmish game, announced today that it has licensed the right to develop and produce the Hell Dorado miniature war-game from Asmodée Editions in France.

“We are very excited to license this amazing property from Asmodée Editions,” said Kai Nesbit, Owner and President of Cipher Studios.  “We have followed this property since the launch and have been discussing the possibility with Asmodée of bringing the game to the English market well before the full license was available.  The opportunity to develop and produce this game in French, English, and possibly other language markets opens the doors to continue the growth and expansion of this exciting universe. ”

“Cipher Studios will continue to collaborate with the original development team, including the writers, sculptors, and other creative talent.  Consistency of the universe is very important to the growth of the game.  We will take all other aspects of the development, such as game mechanics and manufacture of the figures in house,” says Kai Nesbit.  “Hell Dorado is a perfect sister product to Anima Tactics as they are both small scale skirmish games and have similar product development and release styles while catering to different players.  Our goal is to release the first wave of non-French product, including the rulebook, as quickly as possible while continuing to release new figures and content, on a limited basis, until the English release schedule is caught up with the French products.”

Cipher Studios has not announced a release schedule but expects to release the English rulebook and first wave of products by early next year.

    Exciting news!

When can we expect an English Hell Dorado rulebook,
and the next wave of figures…?

    Almost as important;
will English cards be made available to those
who already have a faction or two of the French edition…?

I am so happy with this news. Makes me glad the HellDorado demos I ran at GenCon weren’t in vain. Lots of people want this game. I ran 68+ people through demos and games, and we had 10 people at the tournament.

We’re sending the Anima Tactics rulebook to print in the next few days. We have all the design files for the Hell Dorado book, cards, etc. and will be digging into them forthwith. The rulebook is basically done in translation except we have to update the book with edits and new storyline content that will have to be translated. We’ll release the currently available French product in English in Waves with the coming of the rulebook. We’ll do something with making cards available in English. The next wave of figures have just been commissioned. It will be a while before they come out as it takes a while to sculpt, mold, produce but we will release new stuff as we are catching up with the English releases.

Exact Timeline…as soon as humanly possible. We’re still in the process of transferring the massive amount of Hell Dorado materials so we can’t promise any release dates at this time.

We’re really, really, really excited about this and look forward to connecting with the Hell Dorado community now that we’ve announced the project.

Will the new 1635 rules be incorporated in the english rulebook? They really should, since they have made marked difference to the profiles and the way certain characters work.

Kudos to your efforts! Let me know if there’s anything us players in Europe can do for your assistance. Have you any plans yet for something similiar to the pioneer program?

This is great news for all of us who have armies. Distributor for my country stopped all orders after he heard that Asmodee is discontinuing Hell Dorado. Now there os a change that we can see it again. Cipher, please work hard on this game, so it can become popular as much as something with this setting can become popular.

If I read your comment correctly, you’ll be using one of the existing English translations – whose translation will you be using?

    Hey,
do you also own the rights
    for the Hell Dorado boardgame
    “Claustrophobia” ?

The Official translation files from Asmodee. I don’t have a list of who exactly made which translations but they are the ones Asmodee felt most correct. So far the review of the files are going well and the translations are quite good.

Will Cipher be censoring any of the theme or current artwork in the french rulebook?

I too am curious if you will be censoring the content of the game. A large part of the game’s appeal is that it doesn’t shy away from the subject matter. It would be a shame to see that lost in search of a PG-13.

There may be a few elements that do not make it into the English version of the game, however we do wish to keep the overall feel and flavor of the world.

You of course must do what you feel is necessary, hopefully you will at least take a look at the book when it comes out and decide whether it is something you wish to be involved with at that point.

Any status update to Hell Dorado? I’m trying to get some of the miniatures for other games, and I’m wondering when they’ll be available to purchase through your site.

At this point we unfortunately don’t have any status reports on Hell Dorado.
