If you lose against a creature, are they not discarded?

as far as i know they stay in place until defeated, except for omega of cause, which whould make no sense.

If they are the preliminary encounter then they stay in place, unless it is an event (like Shadow of Omega). If it is a drawn encounter from exploring, it disappears after fought, whether it is defeated or not.
