There are weapons and what not, so why not soul calibur-esque?

Soul Calibur possess terrible game mechanics. I wonder how series managed to reach V.

Clothes-breaking, sadly.

Ah, another one thing that support "I watch anime = I'm perv peeking for panties and fat jiggling boobs" delusion.

Totally.  :(

Seriously, though, fighting games where the women dress like that and the clothes get exploded don't help at all.

In Mortal Kombat Meleena is almost naked but I like her this way =) But she is rare exception to general rule.

clothes do not explode in Soul Calibur

They do in Soul Caliber 4 on home systems.

Suffice to say, I was not impressed the first time the woman I was fighting essentially got reduced to a purple string bikini (no, I'm not kidding).  Neither was my wife.

*sighs*

Yes.  Yes they do.

Soul Caliber 4.  Taki, Maxi, Voldo, those people?

Put them in any of their non-normal costumes, their clothing can be shattered by repeated blows.  Heck, even their 'normal' clothing shows battle damage, though in the case of non-custom stuff it 'just' gets all torn up.

Make ANY custom character, their clothing can be shattered by repeated blows.

End result can be a female character standing there in a bikini.

I own the darned game, Alphawhelp.  I know what I'm talking about.

I suppose I could go find a youtube.

Call it Anima: Tao Zan Tournament.

-ape2020

I am thinking to drop off "Tournament" from that name to get "Anima: Tao Zan".

Omg. Anything but guilty gear. I cannot press buttons that fast. Mortal kombat may be?

I was thinking more in style and focus on story over specific Game Mechanics.

My personal philosophy is that a fighting game needs to be able to support new players and expert players need to be able to play the game to an acceptable level. Guilty Gear and Blazblue fails here in that they rely on the players to be pretty well versed in the game to do well.

Still love the series though. Blazblue has the best story I've seen in a Fighting Game.

Okay, here.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-S9m6nnnkx0&feature=related (Edit: to the best of my knowledge, there's nothing in the video that's any more NSFW than some of the character portraits I've seen posted on this forum... :)

This is a character at the starting of custom character creation in Soul Calibur 4.  Note the fact that she's standing there in her underwear.

Put her in clothing.  Put her in a fight.  She gets bashed around enough, that clothing can be destroyed.  It shatters.  Falls off.  Explodes into little sparkly bits.  Call it what you want.

And yes, she can then end up in a fight looking exactly she does in the first few seconds of the video, standing there in her underwear.

The same thing can happen to the named characters if they fight in their secondary costumes.  Their primary costumes only tear up, showing pre-rendered 'battle-damage'.

But heck, let's not take my word for this.

Soul Calibur Wiki, whaddya say?

http://soulcalibur.wikia.com/wiki/Equipment_Destruction

"When a character has taken severe damage in one of these areas (from High, Middle, or Low attacks, respectively), the armor breaks with an audible shattering sound in a phenomenon called Equipment Destruction...Both custom characters and regular characters are subject to equipment destruction. A character without armor (created in character creation by removing everything) is left in his/her underwear (and bra, for women). These items, obviously, do not break during equipment destruction, although the shattering sound is still heard and the character still takes more damage in that area."

My thought is that they probably could have done better than left the characters standing there in their underwear.
