After the unmitigated success of my previous question on Elan  Roll Eyes, I have another question.

With most (if not all) of the Beryls and Shajads, the total Elan requirements of the Gifts you can receive adds up to more than 100, so even if you have the maximum possible, you have to choose which Gifts to take.

But what happens if your Elan increases, and you could potentially gain access to a new Gift but because of Gifts you bought when your Elan was lower, you don't have enough available?

Can you remove Gifts that you've been granted, or are you stuck with them?

e.g. A Priest starts off with Elan 60, and has Gifts worth 55 points of Elan.  As time goes on, he gets to Elan 70 through his actions, and there's a Gift with a requirement of Elan 70, but a cost of 20 points.

Can he remove an earlier Gift worth 5 points to take advantage of this?  Or does he have to wait until he hopefully gets to Elan 75 to take it, at the risk of never being able to afford the Elan 80, Elan 90 and Elan 100 Gifts?

It's just something I've never exactly been clear on.

I'd say no. There is no such option in the rulebook. Also player don't know exact amount of elan iirc.

And fluffwise I'd say that gifts have to be chosen by the beryl/shajad i.e. GM.

Since there's no clear word for this, it's up to GM interpretation.
I'd allow the switch, but I see not allowing it as an also valid approach.

You're right about the players not knowing their Élan level, Lizbeth, except if they choose it as a starting Advantage obviously.

But the GM could decide to remove certain gifts to allow others.  A lot of GMs though would prefer to know if they are allowed to do that by design, or purely by houserule.

I don't keep the amount of elan my players have secret, that's unnecessary bookkeeping, and it's kind of silly. As for the OP: I would allow it in theory, as long as it didn't mess things up too much. I'd have the player make his case for why he wants the change and also why, in-game, he thinks it would make sense. If it didn't disrupt anything too much, I'd allow it. If he wanted to give up a power he never used, it would be a much easier decision.

The answer is no.  But as always, as a GM, if you want to allow it anyway, nobody will care.
