I am the GM.  I am wanting to put an NPC in with the players.  I need suggestions on what to put with them.  One is playing a Warrior Summoner.  The other is playing a martial arts monk, who is trained in Kung fu and Taekwondo.  I am not sure what type of character to use to compliment them.  Any advice would be helpful, this is our first time playing.

Very old butler (Weaponsmaster with a few fun combat modules) who was in the army back in his youth. Maybe owes a debt to one of the player's family and must serve them. It would be more interesting if the players don't know what he is capable of. Heck, he could even have sworn off hurting others because of some event in the past.

I'd say go for a Freelancer.  Then, if it becomes obvious as you progress what skills you're missing, you can cheaply change towards that.

Trying to choose without knowing what the campaign details are is a bit like trying to nail jelly to a wall.

The first question one might ask is, 'Does the group require an NPC to trot around with them?'

Also the problem is that every time someone pulls such a combo he gets killed by some kind of Lazarus or such.

This is true.  And if so, what purpose are they serving (e.g. guide, employer)?  That might help to make your decision as to how it fits your campaign.

There is another option though.  If they're purely there for support, then you could go for a wizard.  With only combat types in the party, you're likely to need someone to do some healing.

I like to always have an NPC to travel around the group to provide in character suggestions, but the key is to make sure the NPC is pretty much always inferior in combat to the PCs, and make sure the NPC has no self-defeating abilities.

i.e. don't make the NPC have awesome investigation skills so the PCs just ask him to solve all your mysteries for them.

In this case, a Heal & Buff Paladin could fit your taste.

Has anyone seen the independent film called "The Gamers: Dorkness Rising"? Because this is reminding me of it and now I want to go watch that again.

As long as he doesn't overshadow the players, you should be fine o.o

Once, for a purely test reasons, I introduced an almost omnipotent NPC to the party. They never realised that this NPC was THIS powerful (they suspected it to be around 12-15 DnD levels) and actually some of them even liked this NPC.

So I think that almost any power level NPC may be put to the party, as long as it acts in party power level and don't have a goal to shine and show off.

yes i'm still laughing. Beware of the turkey!

About the npc: a wizard can provide buff and healing (and destructive power but your pcs don't seem to need it) and have acces to intellectual skills that the pc may lack

a Freelancer can give secondary skills support (also in the intellectual field)
