Hell Dorado / General Discussion / Re: Ever had this problem?

Definitely.
The way I overcome this is simply doing it step by step. So, your first step would be to block in colors.
After you do that, you can take a break and start step two in your process (Wash, highlight, whatever).
So, take it one step at a time.

Hi t1sfuzzy, and welcome! Thanks for sharing, it's appreciated. It looks like you've got the basics down- Filling in all the areas with color (called blocking). The next step might be to create a super thin "wash" with some brown paint and water and spread it all over the mini. Please experiment and practice this before jumping on a 'normal' model. Practice and try things out on one you don't care so much about. Another technique you might want to look into is drybrushing to add some simple highlights to areas like metal or the face. So, you've got the basics! 1. Prime 2. Block 3. Wash 4. Highlight / Drybrush Hope that encourages you some. There are a lot of great resources on the web to help you out. To link to images, you'll need an online photo storage program like Google's Picasa or something similar. From there, you get a link to copy and paste into the forums here, with the link between this code . Facebook doesn't allow hot linking, unfortunately.

Hell Dorado / Rules Discussion / Re: Mercenaries and Force construction

From Pg 75 of the rulebook:
Mercenary units can be recruited by Companies of any Faction. However, the following restrictions must be followed: Obviously if a Mercenary Officer is leading a Company units from other Factions can’t be included. Therefore it is impossible to include a Mercenary Officer in a non-Mercenary Company.
A Mercenary Independent’s CMD can’t be used to include Troopers from a non Mercenary Faction; they only allow the inclusion of Mercenary Troopers. You can include as many Troopers, Mercenary or not, as you like, as long as you do not include more of them than the total CMD of your Company.
Example: the total CMD of your Company is 7, so you can include up to 7 Troopers. However, 2 of your 7 CMD are provided by a Mercenary unit. Therefore, you can include up to 7 Troopers, but if you choose to hire more than 5, the last 2 will have to be Mercenaries.

I'm sure the translation may have lost some intent...Play it as bases of any model touching another.
If it's a weird model, like the one you linked, I'd ask or pronounce whether it was intended to be touching or not. Did the player leave a gap on purpose, etc.
Glad you are liking HD and feel free to ask questions!

Cipher Studios News and Discussion / General Discussion / Re: New player, interest in mercs

Mercs can stand alone. However, they can be taken with the differenct factions on a limited availability.
A normal tournament game is at 200 points, and the starters are right at/under 100 pts.
Army are built using one officer.
From there, unique independents can only be included once, while others have a limited number, like two or three, etc.
From there, count your command points, which come from the command of each model included so far. From this point, you can't have more "troopers" than total command.
Comman is then used for orders each turn and other fun things. Sometimes a special ability requires you to spend command points permanently, where normally used command refreshes each turn.
To recruit mercenaries, I'll quote from the book to make sure you get it right,
"Company units from other Factions can’t be included. Therefore it is impossible to include a Mercenary Officer in a non-Mercenary Company. A Mercenary Independent’s CMD can’t be used to include Troopers from a non Mercenary Faction; they only allow the inclusion of Mercenary Troopers. You can include as many Troopers, Mercenary or not, as you like, as long as you do not include more of them than the total CMD of your Company."
