I've started assembling a Hell Dorado board.  To keep it simple and portable, I've purchased some grey furniture fabric and cut out a 30" square piece to serve as base of my battlefield.

I like HD's Reconnaissance rules, but for me, the Battlefield Type rules are too restrictive. I want to mix Lava Ponds with Millenary Trees and Refuges. Also, I want my terrain with combination of characteristics not listed in the book. For instance, I want my terrain with the Deadly characteristic to also have the Opaque characteristic, thus giving players a reason for their models to enter the terrain.

My plan is create a custom Battlefield Type and to write the characteristics and point value on the bottom of each terrain piece. This will allow me to be as creative as I want with my terrain, but still use the Reconnaissance rules.

I've done some preliminary work on some rocky terrain. Mindful that some of the models in HD are on 50 mm bases, I took care to ensure that the pathways between the rocks are wider than 50 mm.

The horizontal surfaces of the final product will be textured with sand. I haven't decided upon a final color for my paint scheme.  It will likely be painted as dark stone with sickly green-grey highlight.

and

Scorpion Nest
Cluster - Deadly - Opaque

These little fellas are from GW's long OOP scorpion swarm blister and they've been sitting in my bitz box for ages.  It's time to put them to good use.

Construction - Opaque - Blessed 1 (Combat and Shooting) - Cursed 2 (Faith)

The statue of Mithra will have some competition. I ordered two models from West Wind Productions. These I will also turn into statutes -one for the Christians/Muslims/Jews and one for the Luciferians.

Here's my rocky terrain. All of the extra bitz are from various Games Workshop kits.

The Lava Ponds are from www.mrdandy.com.  This site sells a set of 3 resin lava pools for only $12. It's a good price for an excellent product.

Here's how the board looks so far. As you may have guessed, I am someone who prefers to play on boards with lots of terrain.

Before I start painting, I still have a few more terrain features I want to build.  I'm going to add one or two abandoned and partially ruined Saracen buildings, using MDF Middle East building kits from GameCraft Miniatures.  I am also going to use so the 60mm Lost Souls bases from Mr.Dandy to create some areas with the Obstruction characteristic -something similar in effect as the Hellish Smoke terrain element.

Nice sir.  I am not fond of the grey cloth, but overall it looks really nice!

A bit of progress.  I have put texture on all of my rocky terrain, hills, and lava pools.

My MDF Middle East kit arrived yesterday.  Time to get started on my abandoned Saracen garrison.

One of my favorite things about this kit is that during production the edges of the MDF pieces are have been scorched with flame -presumably to improve the finish.  As an unintended consequence, when the kit is opened it smells like a campfire. Mmmm.  Its much better than that chemical smell one gets from plastic and resin kits. Smiley

More progress on the Saracen garrison.

I've replaced the MDF roof that came in the kit with one of my own making.  I made the roof from lengths of balsa planks.  The building has been assembled so that it can be removed, providing access to the interior.

The front of the building three entrances and the rear has five.  I've sealed up some of the entrances altogether and have partially sealed up others, making windows.  I may add sills to the windows.

The next step will be to use lightweight spackle to fill all of the gaps.  After sanding the patched areas down smooth, I will apply spray texture to give the building a stucco/dried mud finish.

The plastic sheet I used for the floor comes from GW's Warhammer Modular Movement Tray Set.

The plastic door and trap door have been floating around in my bit box for a long time.  I've lost track of their origin.  They may have come from GW's Mordheim boxed set.
