Hobbyist Tactics Episode 5: Paint it Black

Black is, bar none, the most dominate color that will be on your palette. I’d wager, that it is a paint that will be (at least in some small degree) on nearly every miniature you ever paint.

If your miniature features large areas of black, how do you go about highlighting it? Today I’ll be sharing a couple of simple techniques that may help you accomplish this.

First off; here is a general rule of thumb. If your miniature is going to feature a predominately dark color scheme, prime it with black. If your miniature will be utilizing a brighter more vibrant color scheme (blues, greens yellows, reds for example) prime it with a white. Since the paints are not fully opaque, they tend to pick up the base color, even after several coats. I can attest to how horrible it is trying to paint bright sunny yellows over a black primer coat… it is nightmare inducing to be sure. Determining a rough color scheme and choosing the right color to prime the miniature saves a lot of time down the line.

So, since my miniatures today feature a dark monotone palette, black it is!

Circles of Hell: Part 4B

Hello everyone,

Today I will go through doing a simple sculpt  to create faces appearing out of the stones on the soul accumulators I built last time.

You will need the following…

  • Your soul stones for your soul accumulators
  • Some modelling putty (I’m using green stuff)
  • A sculpting tool

This is the hobby tool I use. It is a GW one and I know a lot of people have there own type or different brands. I’m showing it  so you understand what type of edge I’m using for each technique. I will refer to the thin, round end as the round edge and the blade as the knife edge.

Boot Camp: Anima Tactics #5 – Change or Die pt. 1

One of the worst things that can happen to a gamer is when they hit that point in their hobby-career where a favorite game becomes a tiresome bore – especially after they’ve sunk a substantial amount of time, effort, and money into learning rulebooks and painting miniatures.

This can happen for any number of reasons, but more often than not, it’s because their game has stagnated.  Win or lose, the game just doesn’t have that same sexiness that it once did.  The moves all feel the same, the outcomes inevitable.

Boring.

Zaxaan Part 3

Hello everyone, welcome to the latest installment of Tales From Alamut. Today I’ll discuss the final touches to finish the Zaxaan mini I have been working on.

To finish the metal areas off, I applied some weathering effects: starting with a thick wash of Vallejo Game Colour Sepia Ink. I applied this over the whole of the blade, then worked back using a clean damp brush to remove most of the ink from the edge of the blade to simulate the cleaner metal in a high use area. When laying the ink onto the model, be careful not to leave brush strokes in the wash; use your brush to stipple and push the ink around.

Next, use Vallejo Model Color (VMC) Burnt Umber thinned with a glaze medium to the consistency of a thick wash, and apply it in a similar fashion to the previous wash, restricting the paint more to the  body of the weapon to simulate the build up of grime. Follow this with a thinned layer of VMC Read More »

Tactical View 4: Advantage Cards

Before I get started on my examination of the Samael faction, I’d like to talk for just a little bit about Advantage Cards and philosophies behind how to use them. Advantage cards provide units with powerful improvements that can wildly alter the playing field depending upon how they are used. As I see it there are two philosophies to consider when choosing the advantage cards for your list.

  • Play your Strengths
  • Cover your Weaknesses

It should be pretty obvious what I mean by each of those, but the tricky part is deciding when to do which. My philosophy is to default to the former. If my strengths are high damage and high armor, I want to use advantage cards to increase those from high to ludicrous. Doing this ensures that when each unit is sent to do its job, said unit has the greatest chance to succeed at it. I will only utilize the latter option when I come across a situation where either I don’t have the option of further increasing the models strongest abilities or in the situation where the character’s weaknesses are really severely hampering their ability to utilize their strengths.

Since I’m about to start talking about Sameal, let’s use a few of their models as an example.
